Fort William - "The Outdoor Capital of the UK" - can make the place sound scary, lots of adrenaline junkies throwing themselves down mountains that need a cable car to get up - but don't be put off by the extreme image. One of the most enjoyable outings in Lochaber is a gentle evening ride along a loch shore: no blood, sweat or tears involved, just enjoying the tranquillity of the Scottish Highlands.

Fort William is a great area to enjoy your bike, you can feel like you are in the middle of nowhere and be within 15 minutes of the nearest café! You will notice there are a lot of trails within Forestry Commission land, a large number of which are on forestry roads, quiet, traffic free tracks leading through conifer and native woodlands, often passing spectacular viewpoints.

If you have any queries, doubts, would like a recommendation or just a chat, the bike shops are the 'friendly faces' of biking in Lochaber. They can answer your questions and provide you with any advice or equipment you might need.

Don't mistake Fort William as an area for pros only - we aim to provide information for all those who enjoy the countryside by bike, be it road biking, cross country, downhill, or taking the kids out on summer Sunday.
